Dementia care
Dementia care questions, answered carefully
A person living with dementia is an individual, not a label. The manager can discuss whether the home may provide a safe and suitable setting.

Start with the person, not a label
A useful conversation includes familiar routines, communication, distress triggers, relationships, preferences and what helps the person feel safe.
Assessment
Suitability needs a proper discussion
The care team needs to understand the person's current needs and risks before deciding whether the setting may be suitable. A website page cannot make that decision.

Residential care is not nursing care
Summerhill does not provide nursing care. If a person needs nursing care or a more specialist setting, the team can explain that clearly and signpost the next conversation.

A sister home that specialises in dementia care
St Cecilia, at 29 Nelson Road, Poole, Dorset BH12 1ES, is a separate care home with the same owner as Summerhill. Residential care with a dementia specialism. Rated Good overall, and Outstanding for Caring, in the CQC report published 29 October 2025. Checked 12 September 2026.
If dementia means a person would be better supported in a specialist setting, we can talk about St Cecilia early, with time to plan. Moving can be unsettling for someone living with dementia, so a planned move is kinder than a rushed one.
The person is involved in the decision as far as they can be. Where they cannot decide for themselves, the decision is made in their best interests with family and any representatives. A change of home may change fees, and council-funded placements need the council's assessment and agreement.
